When you take a personality test, it doesn’t mean you’re stuck in a fixed category. Instead, you’re discovering how you naturally prefer to think, act, and interact with the world.

This insight can help you unlock hidden strengths, guide you in choosing opportunities that fit your style, and build your self-belief.

Here’s a breakdown of the key ideas behind some of the most well-known personality frameworks.

The Myers-Briggs Model and Its 16 Types

The Myers-Briggs framework is based on Carl Jung’s work and splits personality into four basic preferences. When combined, these create 16 different types. The test looks at four pairs of opposite personality traits.

  • Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I): These letters describe where you get your energy.
    - Extraverts (E) get energy from being with others. You might enjoy group chats or community events.
    - Introverts (I) recharge by spending time alone. This might mean you need quiet time for reflection to reach your best ideas.


  • Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N): This pair shows how you prefer to gather information.
    - Sensing (S) types like facts, details, and clear steps. If you enjoy practical info, this might be you.
    - Intuitive (N) types see the big picture and notice patterns - perfect for idea lovers and future thinkers.


  • Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F): This contrast tells you how you make decisions.
    - Thinking (T) types value logic and facts, often weighing pros and cons when making decisions.
    - Feeling (F) types make choices based on values and relationships, prioritising heart over logic.

    - Judging (J) types prefer structure and planning, thriving on schedules and knowing what’s next.
    - Perceiving (P) types enjoy flexibility and going with the flow, keeping options open as they go.


These four dimensions combine to form types like INFJ (Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging) or ESTP (Extraverted, Sensing, Thinking, Perceiving).

While the names may seem like a jumble of letters, they offer insight into your natural tendencies. Think of it as a starting point that shows where your strengths lie.

Going Beyond Myers-Briggs: The Big 5 and DISC

Describing personality is complex. There are other models, like the Big 5 and DISC, that offer a different understanding of who we are.

The Big 5 Personality Traits:

The Big 5 looks at personality on five broad dimensions:

  • Openness: How open are you to new experiences and ideas?
  • Conscientiousness: How organised, responsible, and detail-oriented are you?
  • Extraversion: Like in the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), this is about how outgoing and social you are - but instead of being put in one box or the other, it shows where you are on a sliding scale. You might be very social, somewhere in the middle, or more on the quiet side.
  • Agreeableness: How kind, warm, and cooperative are you?
  • Neuroticism: This is all about how strongly you react to stress, worries, or emotional ups and downs. If you score high here, it might mean you often feel anxious, moody, or overwhelmed. If you score low, you're probably more steady and calm, even when life gets tricky. It’s not about good or bad - just about how you naturally respond to life’s emotional twists and turns.


This model helps you see a more fluid picture of yourself rather than a strict "type" and offers nuanced insight into what you value and how you express emotions.

DISC Personality Assessment

Often used in business and sales contexts (for example, within Amway), DISC categorises personality into four areas:

  • Dominance (D): Assertive and results-driven.


  • Influence (I): Outgoing and persuasive.


  • Steadiness (S): Calm, supportive, and reliable.


  • Conscientiousness (C): Detail-oriented and systematic.

DISC can be very useful if you’re looking at how to better approach teamwork, leadership, or sales - even if the exact labels differ slightly from the traditional Myers-Briggs model. Here’s how it works in simple terms:

You don’t just “have” Dominance or you don’t - you might have a high level (you love taking charge and making quick decisions), a medium level (you’re assertive when needed), or a low level (you prefer collaboration and avoid conflict).

The same goes for the other traits. You could be high in Influence (very sociable and enthusiastic), or lower in Influence (more reserved or selective in your interactions).

With Steadiness, a high score means you're calm, dependable, and prefer consistency. A lower score might mean you like variety and adapt quickly to change.

For Conscientiousness, a high score means you're super focused on getting things right, following rules, and staying organized. A lower score suggests you're more flexible, maybe a big-picture thinker who’s less worried about every small detail.

What I personally like about DISC is that it’s not about labelling people - it’s about seeing your natural tendencies, especially in how you work, communicate, and handle pressure. And if you're over 50 and thinking of switching careers, doing volunteer work, or starting something of your own, this can be an eye-opener in figuring out how you shine best.

Or maybe you’d enjoy helping out at your local yoga class or library - places where people feel welcome just because you’re there.

If you're job hunting, consider roles where your natural leadership can flourish - coordinating events, managing volunteers, or even hosting group workshops. You could start or lead a local club (like an Evergreens group), mentor younger women, or organise activities in your community.


  • If you’re creative – This is your time to explore and express. If you're considering income options, how about offering your skills to local businesses -graphic design, social media help, or even handmade crafts for markets or Etsy? You could also join that art class you’ve been thinking about, start journaling again, or help beautify your community garden.
